Tree Identification

Trees of Ouachita County, Arkansas

This web site is the result of a Goals 2000 grant received by South Central Service Cooperative located in Camden, AR.  The grant provided Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 cameras, field trips, and lessons in web page design for teams of public school science teachers and librarians.

Arkansas is the Natural State and has the trees to prove it. According to Dwight Moore's book Trees of Arkansas there are approximately 200 native species of trees in the state. Add to that new hybrids the total reaches nearly 300, a good sampling of the nearly 1,200 trees in the United States. Arkansas boasts 44 state parks scattered across the state most offer many excellent opportunities to study trees in their natural settings. Beyond the natural beauty of trees two of the top ten manufacturing industries in the state are forestry related:  Georgia Pacific and International Paper.

With so much emphasis on trees in Arkansas it is helpful to be as knowledgeable as possible about this important renewable resource. With this in mind this site provides a sample lesson and many activities to encourage learning about the many trees of Arkansas.
