Seven Devils Swamp Natural Area

The swamp is located about nine miles east of Monticello along Cut-off Creek at the point where the creekflows from the pine-covered hills of the West Gulf Coastal Plain to the flat lowlands of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain.

Roger Milligan, AGFC district wildlife supervisor stationed at Monticello, said, “Seven
Devils is unique in this country in that it is a cypress and tupelo habitat rather than
hardwoods. We get all sorts of ducks in there - mallards, gadwalls, green-wing teal,
some wigeons and lots of wood ducks.”

According to Rebecca DeArmond’s “Old Times Not Forgotten” book, the name Seven
Devils stems from the seven small creeks merging in the area and the use of the
remote rough and swampy land by fugitives in Civil War days. A ghost from this
period supposedly hangs out in the swamp.
