Ouachita National Forest

The Arkansas portion of the Ouachitas has had a long history of the various cultures of people living in the area.  From the Native American groups including the Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw Indians to the European groups of the French, Spanish and English.  Each group made contributions to the Ouachitas.  Native Americans referred to this area as "Washita" which means "good hunting grounds".  The French spelling of the Indian pronunciation was "Ouachita".  The French spelling of Ouachita continues to be used today.

Today, the Ouachita National Forest provides many recreational activities.  Individuals have the opportunity to hunt, fish, canoe, hike, or bicylce through the area.  The forest  will provide a place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty and serenity of the area.  For rockhounds, the mountains are full of various treasures.  Quartz crystal is native to the area along with other minerals.

Whether you are interested in biological, geological, historical or recreational value of the Ouachita National Forest located in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains, you enjoy a visit to the area.  The natural beauty and slow pace of the area provides a restful adventure you will enjoy and come to appreciate.
