Arch Bridge at Blanchard Springs
Arch Bridge at Blanchard Springs

Look around you and what do you see?   STRUCTURES.  They are everywhere:  homes, apartment buildings, office buildings, factories, towers, skyscrapers, and bridges.  Even nature relies on structure:  a bird nest, a bee hive, an ant colony.

This website includes a basic lesson as to how upper elementary students can learn about the importance of the arch in bridge design.  The learner will be introduced  to the concepts of tension and compression and shape and strength as they relate to arch bridge design.   The learner will gain an understanding of these concepts through hands-on activities and will then apply these concepts to build and test 3 model bridge designs for load capacity.
